Djembe Skins - Premium Selection & Professional Assembling
Why the Skin Defines Your Djembe's Sound
The skin is the vibrating heart of every djembe. Its thickness, elasticity, origin, and the precision of its tensioning determine up to 80% of the instrument's tonal character, the sharpness of the slap, the depth of the bass, and the thickness of the tone. Choosing the right skin for your djembe and your playing context is almost as important as choosing the shell itself.
At Djembe AWA, we select only premium African goat skins, sourced from trusted suppliers in West Africa and carefully graded for thickness, uniformity, and acoustic quality. Every skin we mount is tensioned using professional equipment by Jeremy Tomasck, a Belgian percussion luthier and djembe specialist.
Our Available Skins

Thin Goat Skin - Bright & Fast
Ideal for beginners, djembe lesson contexts and playing styles that emphasis the slap and tone. Thin skins produce a brighter, more cutting sound with fast attack. Easier to tension and maintain, they are also an excellent choice for smaller head sizes (30-34cm), easy to play, but often having the shortest lifespan (also taking into account the tension that is put on it).

Medium Goat Skin - The Balanced Choice
he most versatile choice for intermediate to advanced players. Medium skins produce a balanced tonal profile — clear slap, defined tone and a warm, projecting bass. Suitable for all head sizes and most playing contexts from practice to stage performance. Lifespan should always be considered in relation to the tension that is put on it.

Thick Goat Skin - Deep & Powerful
Designed for stage performance and serious players.
Thick skins produce a powerful bass, a crystal-clear slap, a deep tone, and a sustain that is easily adjustable depending on the tuning. Ideal for larger djembes (35-38cm) and high-volume playing in outdoor or large venue contexts.

Calfskin / Horsehide - On Special Order
For musicians seeking a very high-pitched sound, we offer calfskin or horsehide heads by special order. Calfskin and horsehide produce an exceptionally clear and high tone with almost no sustain at all. Available in limited quantities, contact us for pricing and availability.
