AWA Series
Premium Djembes in Precious African Woods

The AWA Standard — What Makes These Djembes Different

Every AWA Series djembe begins as a hand-carved shell, shaped by master craftsmen in Guinea, West Africa, from timber selected for its density, grain and resonant quality. Each shell then makes its way to Belgium, where Jeremy Tomasck individually inspects, assembles and quality-checks the complete instrument before it is listed for sale.

This dual-origin process, Guinean craftsmanship combined with Belgian percussion luthier finishing, produces djembes that carry the authenticity of West African tradition with the consistency and quality control of a professional workshop. No two AWA Series instruments are identical.

Available Woods in the AWA Series

The AWA Series is available in four primary woods, each producing a distinct tonal character:

Lenke (Afzelia africana): The reference professional djembe wood. Dense, warm, and powerful, maximum projection.

Bala (Pterocarpus erinaceus): Rare, bright, and punchy. A collector's wood with exceptional upper-register clarity.

Kolo Kolo: Light, clear, and resonant, ideal for travel, teaching, and studio use.

Melina (Gmelina arborea): Balanced, light sound and sustainable sourcing, the best introduction to premium djembe sound. Ideal for travel.

AWA Series — Available Sizes

AWA Series djembes are available in a range of head diameters from 30cm to 40cm, with weights ranging from approximately 8kg to 15kg depending on wood species and shell dimensions. Contact us if you are looking for a specific size or custom specification.
